검은 진주라는 별칭을 갖고 있는 Diana Ross는 1944년 디트로이트의 공업도시에서 가난한 집안의 장녀로 태어났다.
그녀는 어릴 때부터 음악적 재질이 풍부했는데, 고등학교 시절에는 친구와 더불어 보컬그룹을 조직, 교내에서 인기있는 

보컬 그룹으로 활동을 하였다.

이들의 음악적 재질을 인정한 모타운 레코드에서는 그들을 픽업했는데 고등학생의 신분으로 트리오 Supreams란 

그룹 명칭을 받았다.
다이아나 로스의 음악 활동은 그룹 슈프림스 시절과 솔로 시절로 구분할 수가 있다.

Supreams 시절은 흑인여성 그룹으로서뿐만이 아니라 대중음악계에서 여성그룹이 성공할수 있는 가능성을 보여주었는데, 

1969년 다이아나 로스가 슈프림스를 탈퇴하기까지 챠트의 No.1은 무려 12곡이나 돼 여성그룹으로서는 가장 많은 기록과 

인기를 남겼다. 

upside Down' 1980년 발표한 10번째 솔로 앨범 [Diana]에 수록된 곡이다.
앨범은 빌보드 팝 앨범챠트 2위, R&B 앨범챠트 정상에 올랐다.
'Upside Down'은 팝 싱글챠트, R&B 싱글챠트, 댄스챠트 모두 정상에 올랐다.

앨범은 상업적으로 제법 성공을 거둔 작품으로, Chic의 멤버였던 Nile Rodgers와 Bernard Edwards가 모든 곡들을 작곡, 연주하고 프로듀서까지 맡았던 앨범 이다.
싱글 'Upside Down'은 그룹 Chic의 대명사였던 Disco, Funk, R&B의 묘미를 보여주는 곡으로 다이아나 로스에게 부와 영광을 가져다 주었다.
이곡은 빌보드가 선정한 "Greatest Songs of All Time"에서 62위를 차지하기도 했다.
