Commodores - Still

흑인 음악의 메카라면 모타운 레코드라 얘기할 수 있다.
그만큼 모타운 레코드는 흑인 음악만을 전문으로 하는 레코드 회사인데 현존하는 흑인 음악의 대가들은 거의가 다 이 레코드 회사 출신의 아티스트들이다.

Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robins, Temptations, Four Tops 등이 다 이 레코드 회사 출신들인데 코모도스 역시 모타운 레코드의 간판 그룹이다.
6인조 흑인그룹 Commodores의 발생은 알라바마주의 터스키지 대학 시절로부터 이어진다. 

이들은 상급생들의 권유와 충고로 학교 행사를 담당할 그룹을 만들게 되었는데 학창시절의 그룹 이름은 Joys라는 명칭을 썼다.
이들은 학교 축제와 학교 근교의 도시에서 노래로 아르바이트를 하기도 하였는데, 본격적인 음악 활동은 학교 졸업을 한 1967년부터 시작된다.

이후 1969년부터는 애틀란틱 레코드와 처음 계약을 맺으면서 첫 싱글 'Keep On Dancing'을 발표하지만 별 반응이 없는 특징 없는 사운드가 되고 말았다.
그러나 첫 싱글이 인기를 얻지는 못했지만 그래도 이들의 실력은 인정받아 1971년『Jackson 5』 쇼에 오프닝 밴드로 찬조출연하게 되었고 이것이 계기가 되어 모타운 레코드와 계약을 맺게 됐다.

'Still'은 1979년 발표한 7번째 앨범 [Midnight Magic]에 수록된 곡으로 11월 17일 Billboard 1위곡이다.('Three Times A Lady'에 이은 2번째 1위곡) 같은 앨범에 수록된 'Sail On'은4위에 올랐다.
